UCF Students Urge Orlando to Get Tested
Monday November 26-December 1, 2012 (Orlando, Fla.) – Members of VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood at the University of Central Florida have organized a week of action urging UCF students, faculty and Orlando community members to take control of their sexual health and get tested for Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections. During this week members of VOX will hold educational and interactive events on campus while providing resources for testing and information about STIs, closing out with an HIV/AIDS awareness rally on Friday November 30, 2012 in honor of World AIDS Day on December 1.
The GYT: Get Yourself Tested Week of Action will take place outside of the UCF Student Union from Monday November 26 to Friday November 30, 2012 from 10:00am – 2:00pm.
One in two sexually active young people will contract a sexually transmitted disease by the age of 25, and most won’t know it. Half of all new reported STIs last year occurred in people under the age of 25. This directly affects the UCF community.
VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood at UCF knows how prevalent STIs are in Florida and especially Orange County and it is our goal to reduce the spread of these infections by providing information about the most commonly transmitted STIs, how and where to get tested, and engaging with the group most at risk, young people.
We will be handing out 500 condoms, 400 GYT Discount cards, and 100 GYT Safe Sex kits over the course of 5 days to UCF students and faculty who pledge to take control and empower themselves through preventative care by getting tested.
Senior Health Educator and Research Investigator at Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando, Ebony Section says that “young people need to get tested so they can feel empowered by their health and have that peace of mind.” Research shows that the sooner a sexually active person knows their status with that STI test, the sooner treatment can start and the fewer health complications can result if that test was positive. “STIs are more common than young people think, but most are curable and all are treatable” says Lisa Phillips, Research Liaison with the Teen Health Empowerment Study
Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando tests for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HIV and Herpes for $79.00.

Masturbation is still a taboo in society. Even though top researchers and sexuality experts all agree that masturbation is a normal, healthy part of our sexuality, we are still taught, usually through religion and culture, that it’s something we should all avoid doing; it’s…
When my parents caught me masturbating when I was younger my mom took me aside and told me what it was called and to simply lock my door when I did it. She didn’t explain much else but I had a sinking feeling that I should be ashamed (even though I’m sure that wasn’t her intention) and that I should hide it. I’ve since come to realize although masturbation isn’t something one should necessarily take part in in public and privacy is often good, it’s NOTHING to be ashamed of. I’ve been a pretty happy camper these last 10 years.
Here are some pretty insightful Mythbusters in Masturbation. Check them out and let us know what you think. #RealTalk #EndShame #vagina
